Welcome to Freedom Creek Prairie

Meet Our Team

Let our strong work ethic and commitment to detail help you create habitat as nature intended.

At Freedom Creek Prairie, we are here to serve you. Your county office can help you begin the process and identify which practices your land qualifies for. Then give us a call to discuss what options would be best suited for your particular land management goals.

Rick Schafer

I’ve grown up in the same community and lived on a farm my whole life. I spent 15 years running a commercial sprayer then serving as Operations Director for the same Ag retail company. I’ve always been driven to set myself apart, rise above others and strive for excellence to meet the need of every customer, every time. In 2010 my wife and I left our “day jobs” and started our conservation business. The years have passed quickly, and the business has grown beyond our expectations. I am grateful to make a living doing something I am so passionate about- conservation and leaving this land better than when I found it.

Julie Schafer

I love my job and feel very blessed to be able to say that. I am a retired RN and have been working side by side with Rick at Freedom Creek Prairie for the past 11 years. We began our business together out of a passion for the native plant community that once covered our countryside. It is our goal to navigate through each individual conservation plan and help our customers understand the steps to a successful seeding. Along with our Conservation business, we farm and raise hay. To me, there is nothing better than when my “office chair” is the seat of my open station JD 3020 raking and enjoying the smell of fresh-cut hay. We have two daughters and four grandsons who are the light of life. We love our family time and enjoy “jeeping” and camping with them.

Wendi Boswell

Hi, I am Wendi, and I am the daughter of Rick and Julie. I joined the family business in 2017 as the Office Manager and have learned so much about conservation and native seed implementation. There is so much beauty in establishing a native prairie. I have a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in Human Development and Family studies but agriculture has always had a special place in my heart. Once you’re a farm girl you are always a farm girl. I currently live in Corning, IA with my husband Jason and our 2 sons, Parker (15) and Cooper (7). We love being outdoors, hunting, fishing, spending time on our local lake, and “jeeping” in the mountains. I am very excited to help you with all of your cover crop and native seed needs.

“You will not find harder working, dedicated, and nicer people than the crew at Freedom Creek Prairie! We highly recommend them!”
